Abstract

The increase in the generation of urban solid waste, coupled with low public participation in selective waste collection, highlights the need for technological solutions capable of promoting sustainable practices and expanding access to information. In this context, this work aims to develop and evaluate an intelligent system focused on optimizing the collection of recyclable waste in the municipality of Pau dos Ferros/RN. The proposed system consists of an interactive digital platform and an automated electronic waste bin, equipped with sensors and RFID technology, allowing the identification of users and the registration of discarded waste. The methodology involved mapping existing collection points, developing the platform with integration to location APIs, and conducting experimental tests with users to evaluate the functionality and impact of the proposed solution. The results showed a significant increase in participant engagement and environmental awareness, as well as the registration of 386 recyclable waste items collected during the testing period. A greater interest from users in adopting sustainable practices was also observed, driven by the use of technology as an educational and interactive tool.
