Abstract

This article aims to raise some questions about cultural practices and their relationships with symbolic systems mediated by religion, based on a reading of visual culture. To this end, it undertook a brief contextualization of Culture, Visual Culture and Religion, based on authors such as Hall (2016), Hernández (2007) and Nunes (2018). The work used as a trigger for these reflections the short documentary “Para Além dos olhos” (Beyond the eyes) (2013) by director Cirlla Machado, which analyzes the intersections of the formation of a cultural identity in the context of religious representation in its symbolic dimension.
