Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is an illness with moderate incidence in dogs. It is characterized by a disturbance on endocrine pancreas with reduction in serum levels of insulin. The deficiency or absence of insulin promotes alterations in the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. The diagnosis can be made through the measurement of blood glucose levels, which are increased in affected animals. The main symptoms of this illness are polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, and glucosuria. The treatment is variable regarding to the type of diabetes, but daily administration of insulin can be needed.
