Abstract

Aiming to establish the frequency distribution of TVT relating to sex, race, age, corporal incidence, main clinical signs, diagnosis methods and treatments a case study was conducted to analyze the canine population attended by UFERSA Veterinary Hospital, Mossoró, RN, Brazil. From January 2000 to December 2004 clinical files from animals assisted by the Medical Clinic Service were separated in different classes and submitted to frequency analysis. The major incidence was over female, mixed breed, aging from three to five years old, main affected organ was the genital, diagnosis was based on imprint and aspirative cytology using fine needle. Chemotherapy using vincristin sulphate (0.75 mg/m2) was the main treatment, in average 5 doses were needed. Therefore is important to emphasize that preventive campaigns are to be made to clarify the risks and the how important is to avoid dogs on streets for those can become potential reservatory for TVT.
