This paper aims to analyze the effects of OTDR configuration variations on optical test results, using advanced configuration mode features. The instrument's operating principle and fundamental concepts, such as the dynamic range and dead zone, were revised. The instrument configuration parameters were studied, such as, pulse width, acquisition time, sampling resolution, among others, and how these parameters are interrelated. Optical tests with OTDR were carried out in a real optical link, with variation of the configuration parameters. The results were analyzed based on the theoretical framework, identifying ways to better explore the features of the advanced configuration mode.
